Lair of the Evildoer is a top down, twin stick, dungeon crawling, zombie themed indie game developed by Going Loud Studios. It is available on the XBLIG Marketplace for just a dollar or 80 MS.

You step into the shoes of Dr. Odius’ freshly made creation and he wants to finish you off before you can exit his “lair”. The game contains 20 dungeon-like levels as well as 30 enemy types and about 25 different weapons which have their own little spin-off variants. The game also contains an RPG element to it where you are awarded upgrade points when you level and they can be allotted to slots such as Dexterity, Strength, Vitality and Defense. All of these are generic RPG characteristics which you can upgrade based on your own playstyle.

Your character can only hold three base weapons: a melee weapon, an infinite ammo pistol/revolver, and a primary weapon (SMGs, shotguns, RPGs, etc…) that uses up ammo. As you clear levels, you come across loot stashes that usually contain med-packs or ammo crates and every so often when you kill an enemy, they drop weapons that you can pick.

In order to clear a level, you must make it alive to the end of the dungeon/lab at which you must climb down a ladder to move onwards to the next level. The game itself isn’t too hard to grasp and if you are ever killed, you must begin at the beginning of the level. The more you level up, the better your upgrades become and the better suited you are to face the next barrage of enemies. The RPG element that is tied to the game works great at helping you through the game and give you the rewarding feeling.

The gameplay does get repetitive after a while though as you simply need to wipe out level after level and survive while you’re at it and the game doesn’t take too long to finish either. Once you’re done with the 20 levels, you can only really create another character and start a new game but since the game is like Diablo or Torchlight, it never plays the same again. There is quite a bit of replay value here if you choose to take advantage of it and if you appreciate games like this.

The game’s graphics aren’t too great but for an indie game, they are perfect combined with the fun filled gameplay and comic value. The game also has a good sense of humor that keeps you hooked onto it to find out what more Dr. Odius has to say about his “daisy” of a creation!

Lair of the Evildoer has solid value for being an indie title for a dollar and therefore deserves a 3 out of 5. Go check out the game now!!

Game 2 Gamer’s Final Score 3.5 / 5

Seems like a very simple game but from what I read, I don’t think I want to invest in it
