Atlus seems to be giving as something of the normal path from traditional games, now we get Rock Of Ages from them. It’s a fun, addicting game to get into…

The game starts you off where you need to escape the underworld of Hades, and how can you go about doing so? By making a giant boulder and smashing through the door right? Exactly, but of course there is a bit more to it than that.

The idea is the break down your opponent’s castle by launch giant boulders down a path way to collect speed before they break down your door and roll over your character with their boulder.

The game has a twist to it as well; you and your opponent can set defense objects in the path to try and deter them from getting to you or destroy their boulder all together. You have towers, exploding barrels, wild elephants and more, but each has a cost and you get gold by destroying units they build or running over their towns people with your boulder. You can also upgrade your boulder to make it tougher and do more damage. These upgrades are boulders with spikes, a fire boulder and even a boulder with wings to let you jump over units and even make short cuts to their castle.

The game features a great sense of humor; it pokes fun at past games, movies, and history with Leonidas and the famous line “this is Sparta!” It also has the type of art style you would see from painters as Pacso and Da Vinci and is extremely fun to with the cut scenes.

The controls can be a frustrating at times and annoying as sometimes you will try to jump your boulder over a step or a unit and it doesn’t so you end up smashing into it and having to figure a new way around. I hate to say this as a gamer, but at times I felt that the CPU/A.I. at times “cheats” by perfectly doing something and leaves you scratching you head like “how in the…” but it all comes down to who is faster down the path. By being the faster one down the path and hitting the door makes your team start working on a new boulder.

While your team is working on a new boulder to roll down you can use that time to your advantage and build defenses on the path to make your opponent fall or get stuck and give you time to try and get another boulder to break down the doors.

I will admit that for a simple game it is quite addicting and fun. Rock Of Ages also features a mini game we all love, skeeball, but as a boulder, the idea is to break as many targets down the path before getting to the target and rolling the boulder in, just like as a kid! There is of course, story mode and multiplayer mode online you can do to challenge other players.

It’s a fun game and is a great idea for something new and different than we have seen in a while, Atlus at times likes to think outside of the box and this time it was a work of art!

I played the demo with really low expectations but it really surprised me to see a fairly fun game, it mixes history with movies, games and girly screams.
