ASSAULT GUNNERS HD EDITION is set in the year 208X when Mars is in the process of terraformation with an expected timeline of 300 years till completion. Back on Earth, a great war erupts and millions of migrants flee to Mars through the Planet Remodelling Project, which is accelerated with the aid of ANTS, a completely robotic automated system. The migrants build large dome-shaped colonies with now stable climates and rush to construct cities within them to sustain the flow of refugees. Time passes and the World Federation has set up military colonies on Deimos and Phobos, and the dwarf-planet Ceres is moved to Mars’ orbit to help create an ocean for the planet. One day, communication is suddenly lost with the surface of Mars and a Peace Keeping Force called DAT whom are currently training on Deimos are sent to investigate.
Coming from the previous release of the game, we now get an HD version of Assault Gunners. The idea behind Assault Gunners is one that comes with limitless potential to be a great game. Right off the bat the game captures you with the idea of controlling a mech for yourself, as well as a small group that fights along with you.
One of the biggest challenges faced while taking on this game experience was movement mechanics. All of your movements as the player feel stiff with no ability to adjust the speed in which you would like your mech to move around, adjust aim, turn around or turn a corner. Also, it is only possible to play in third person, where it would be nice to be able to choose between third person and first person at the click of a button. It feels as though the game has be upgraded to HD, they forgot to fine tune the controls.
Your mech is fully customizable, which is awesome but could be improved by allowing players to choose different pieces of armor rather than making it as a set. The targeting system of the game seems low tech compared to the idea of fighting in a highly advanced mech unit. Another issue we noticed was combat along with the story. The story has some depth to it but when you start a mission it is always the same ole same ole, run and shoot run and shoot, with not much change in between or changing missions up a bit with a protect convoy or something.
After a while that becomes increasingly more boring with the repetitive and same thing it begins to lose interest. An open world story line would be a perfect fit for this game. Give the player objectives and different things to do but allow the player to choose. Think about running around an open world in a giant mechanical suit with some wicked bad ass weaponry and a cool look and you’ve got yourself a top seller. Over all the concept of this game is amazing, but actual game play leaves a lot to be desired. Which is truly unfortunate for this game because it is loaded with potential.
