When Ubisoft took a few years off between Assassin Creed games it was a wake-up call. The games were starting to “drone” and not have the appeal of what earlier Assassin’s Creed games were. We got Origins and saw that the time of from the series was a great thing! Now we get Odyssey and Ubisoft hit it out of the park!
Odyssey begins with the battle of 300, the famous 300 spartans and Leonidas. You take control of Leonidas and get a small taste of the new fighting and combos, specials and the feel of the game. You take on a few soldiers and then of course a mini-type boss. Once this is complete you move on to the actual game. It fast forwards to Alexios. The main character of the game. Which for the first time you can choose either a male or a female character to use in the game.
You begin doing small missions to start fine tuning your skills and leveling up. (the leveling up system is back from Origins). Each time you complete missions and make kills you can XP points that will level you up, once you gain a level you get to choose one ability to add to your arsenal. All of these will make your character stronger and be able to wear better armor, better weapons and more. The customization is a well loved feature. You now get to make your character your own. Something that a game where your decisions shape the world around you, is a great add-on.
As you progress in the game you get flashbacks and more info on the characters around you. You come to find out that you came from Sparta and you were cast out as a boy. Your father is the great Spartan general and is your target. What do you do? Do you kill your father or make different choices? You make the options and forge the story.
The fighting style is something change we did not care for at all. The gameplay and fighting in the game is perect, but the fact that they moved the striking buttons from the button pad to the triggers is just something I don’t like and can’t get comfortable with. They did this on Origins and I was hoping they would move it back, but Ubisoft choose to keep it. I just prefer doing combos and specials in those combos are better done with the button pad. I feel it loses something. Not a big deal, just something that bugged us.
The game itself is truly beautiful, with stunning visuals and details put into the game. The amount of gameplay packed into this is truly amazing, with the day and age of gaming relying heavily on multiplayer aspect it’s great to see a game go to single player and story-driven type of play. We miss this in games, don’t get us wrong, we love multiplayer games, but we miss and feel that the single player games are rare nowadays. And it’s great Ubisoft still makes these rarities.
