Today we tackled Comic Jumper The Adventures of Captain Smiley, one of (if not the most) anticipated release from Xbox’s Game Feast line up. Created by Twisted Pixel also known for The Maw and Splosion’ Man (Great Games).
We start off as Captain smiley, and your sidekick connected to you called Star. The comic book that Captain Smiley’s comic book has been canceled and to get your book back up you need to collect money to be able to pay for your own series again. The way that this is done is by making guest appearances’ in other comic book titles.
Captain Smiley’s first adventure that you take on is a Fantasy like setting, much like Captain Smiley becomes Conan! One of the coolest things about this game is the look of the lead in all of the 3 different comic genres will change in all of these! You fight through the Fantasy, the old Silver age type comic setting and the Manga style anime in your appearances’ while trying to earn enough to bring yourself titled book back to life. To me Twisted Pixel added a bonus because I love the look of the main lead, but at the same time I love when developer’s decide to shake it up a bit and change they look of the main character to fit the story, which never really happens in an XBLG (Xbox Live Arcade Game).
The game also changes up a bit from going to the side scrolling action, to a shooter dodging bullets and bad guys, using a unicorn or sliding on a robot girl down the side of a building. The game keeps you entertained and interested by all of this and with the witty comic relief of Star. The supporting cast all have great one liners and make you laugh throughout the game. Another little treat is that you have the ability to upgrade Captain Smiley with buying more health, strength, guns doing more damage and so on.
The game play is very well put together and very fluid. The shooting is almost like the early 90’s Smash T.v. with the 360 degree shooting, by using the right analogue stick to point what you want to shoot and using the left to control the character. The dodging and sliding sometimes makes thing a bit difficult, you may need to chain a jump and a slid together but there is a lag between moves. The only frustrating thing I found about this game is sometimes when you need to jump from ledge to ledge Captain Smiley will slide off the ledge instead of jumping. But to counter this you do have unlimited tries and lives.
All in all this is a must grab game for gamers, I suggest that this is a pick up for for fans of the Twisted Pixel games, and the recent price has dropped!.
Game 2 Gamer’s Final Score 3.5 / 5
