Hail to the King Baby! After 12 years of nothing for the fans of the Duke Nukem series he’s back on the next Gen console for the fans it’s a miracle, and for new fans it’s a chance for something different than the usual.

If that was only the case. When Duke Nukem Forever was announced it was a huge news day for gamers, but it fell short in our book. The game starts off with you at a stadium to fight a giant robot alien to get the hang of the ropes again. After words it turns out that Duke himself is playing a game and you are waiting to go onto a talk show when aliens come back to earth to try and settle a score with Duke.

Let’s start with the control’s, (since that’s almost the only good thing about the game) they are responsive, with no lag or issues. Another good thing about the game is most of the world is interactive and you can mess and play with most of the stuff in the “Duke Cave” from pin ball (yes there is an achievement associated with it) to weight lifting. All these thing also increase your maximum ego (your health).  The graphics are just ok, most of it to me looks tweaked (the most they could tweak it) from a 12 year old game that was just ported over from a Playstation 1 console to a PS3 without just re-hauling the entire game and pushing it back to work out some bugs and making the game what it should have been, they just dusted off the old work and made a few changes and called it gold.

Now when we tried the demo for DNF we were very disappointed with it, the gameplay, the graphics, the feel of it and all. And we let everyone know how we felt about it and oh boy did we catch flak for it. Now…. Oh now people and our readers feel the pain that we felt playing it. But there are those die hard fans of the series that will defend the game to no end. No it may seem that we aren’t fans of Duke Nukem, but we are, by far we are fans and love that Duke is back in games, but we think that Gearbox dropped the ball on this and failed us with a game that would deliver.

With the single player we thought the potential was there, the story could have drawn in the player more and it just felt something was left unsaid or left out with everything that could’ve been added to the game, the story, the graphics and so much more.  We just cannot find a way to justify paying $65 for this game. Let alone $100 for the collector’s edition the mini-bust was a nice touch, but the playing cards? Come on! Mini cards? Who use’s those? One thing missing we couldn’t believe was that the collector’s edition came with no exclusive in-game content, to us when you pay more for a higher edition of a game you should get something in-game as well to show you went the extra mile to support the game.

All in all the game isn’t worth it and we tried many times to find a way to justify the game, but we just couldn’t lie. We wouldn’t be shocked or surprised that if within a few weeks the price drops to try and increase sales. So to end this review we will part with almost how it started, “Fail to the King Baby!”

It’s time to kick ass and chew bubble gum…and I’m all outta gum. I played a little of the First Access Demo and wasn’t too pleased myself. Hubby enjoyed it though, cracked me up that you had to take a piss before you got to even play. I wonder if someone will try to bring Wolfenstein back or not since they tried with this one. Main reason I liked it though is because it is still somewhat of a classic for me, always played Duke, Doom & Wolfenstein…

you do know they released a new Wofenstein a year ago… lol it was better then duke!

      • CherryRasulka says:

no s**t, wow, I have been out of the loop, looks like I REALLY need to start saving me up some money and buy me some more gaming material. Thanks for the knowledge!

  2. liljrSanchez says:

Harsh, but brutally honest. Was thinking of picking it up, but thanks for the Review as I have changed my mind!

I also played the demo, which I won from you ;), and I too felt it was clunky and just disappointing. This would have been an awesome game back 13 years ago, not now though…

  3. Nyall says:

Made me laugh, taking a piss at the beggining, after that I wasn’t too pleased but then some fun action came, it was gooood:)

  4. Jokerzwild says:

ya its too bad, so if it was sub 20 would it be worth it?

  5. montow says:

I wasn’t expecting much from a game that was suppose to be out so long ago but hey this game will still sell because of the name. I played the demo and i thought it was ok

  6. TacosWillEatUs says:

Im kinda disappointed in the DNF, I honestly expected more

  7. ComptonEMT says:

So i’m by no means a huge super fan… but i believe it accomplished what it was trying to be… personally i like a few of the “less appealing” touches in the game… gibs for one i was overjoyed to see… yeah they may have looked a little bad but they brought back that old gib feel that always made me say “COME GET SOME” even if i was playing quake or some other game with gibs…

i didn’t expect much from this game except one liners, “potty humor”, naked chicks, and some over the top elements… and truthfully… it delivered on that… so i’m happy with it… btw… whats up with all the reviews saying its only references from the 80’s and 90’s that none of todays gamers would get… i noticed a lot of the newer reference material are things within the last decade…

  8. fiveeyedduck says:

The demo was OK but the game isn’t worth buying.

  9. Wuvein says:

Think this is one I will have to wait till its in the discount bin to pick up

  10. Jason foster says:

Duke kicks ass hopefully his time has come yet again

  11. DK_Co says:

Looks like it’s more for cheap jokes rather than gameplay.

  12. skeen77 says:

The fact that even G2G gave it a low score is telling! The demo was very poor, like a bad fps from 8 years ago. No amount of Duke catechisms could make this one work. Expect it to be on sale for $19.99 in 3 months.

  13. FAIZ says:

What are you talking about? the Whole game is about working out at Duke’s gym.

  14. _Patou68_ says:

i’m sorry but i do not speak English, I am a French woman. it is damage not?

  15. Dongle says:

To be expected really, after all this time, all the chaos etc… such a shame.

  16. Badkarma says:

Loadtimes FTL!!! Great Duke story. Had fun playing, but those load time are a big problem!!

  17. T9X 69 says:

I really wish I would have picked this game up. All the reviews have been negative, but my friend picked it up and he loved the demo the same as I did and said it was fucking awesome. One day I’ll play it though 🙂

  18. Halorach says:

Disappointing but honestly I still want to play it, it is such a large part of gaming history and nostalgia you got to at least give it a play through right?

  19. filoleg94 says:

I am old fan of Duke, so I hope to enjoy this game when I get it, even if I don’t win. This game is not about revolutionary gameplay, or perfect gamedesign. It is about fun and pleasing old fans

  20. Shift says:

Played a little when I rented it. Not worth buying when it is $60

  21. Brian Staulcup says:

I’d like to win this game, so I won’t feel like I’ve wasted my money if it sucks!

  22. Rennie says:

Im not buying this .. but i will however lend it off my friend ..

  23. I <3 all the Duke games but I appreciate much that devs gave us DNF finally! I mean truly a real Thank for everyone who brought this game to us after all the years. And it'd be a great just like at good old days to kick some alien ass!
