The recent release of the G.I. Joe: Operation Blackout was a huge deal when you are talking to collectors of the new 6 inch line of G.I. Joe action figures by Hasbro. IguanaBee & Fair Play Labs take the classic look from the old cartoon and comics and combined that in new animation story breakaways. Combined with the voice over it gives you just enough to not be overwhelming with non-play through story and gets you back into the action fast. The cut scenes are mostly drawn stills with minimum movement, but fans of the series do appreciate it.
The gameplay features switching back and forth from Cobra to G.I. Joe characters, so the game doesn’t leave you flat doing the same thing, using only one person set to unlock future characters. Just to play through again and unlock more like other games. Although, reloading of weapons is slow and takes so much time, it feels like there may be a slight delay in moving around, all in all the fans are getting what they asked for. Choosing which character at the beginning of each mission gives you the flexibility and fun to play as your favorite G.I. Joe or Cobra character. Also by completing missions and the game you can unlock character skins.
Playing as your favorite G.I. Joe or Cobra from mission to mission lets you expand in gameplay and learn to use characters different ways. Although it does seem like sometimes the computer player, (when not playing in co-op mode) tends to get in the way and is mostly useless. Other times helping you finish killing your opponent when it is really needed for novice players. Playing through the game it seems that they Hasbro may have dropped some Easter eggs in for upcoming figures they have yet to release in the 6 inch line.
Over all the game is easy to play with a basic control of just 2 buttons really, and designed to let even the most beginning player have a chance to have fun in Action Figure mode to the advanced players. It does showcase some amazing artwork and design in the story art cut away, so big props to that team. The lack of online play does hurt a game that features a strong presence of “team play” which can only be achieved through couch co-op. This was a huge miss for Hasbro to not feature online co-op. We definitely would say that any G.I. Joe fan should play this even if you side with Cobra or not it is fun time for everyone, but maybe wait for a sale.
