Welcome back to the COG! GOW3 is back and better than ever for the fans of the series. The game has new features, new modes and tons of owning other players online! We dig into the story, the game and Clayton Carmine!

The story is 2 years after Gears 2 story line. You can tell right away the game is well polished and an incredible upgrade for the first 2 games, well if you played the beta then you already understand it’s truly amazing. Starting out from waking up from a dream and understanding why Marcus Fenix was busted out of jail in the first game and seeing the events that lead up to answers from both previous games and seeing pieces fall into place. For the first time you can play the campaign solo, co-op or 4 players on xbox live.

The controls are of course like always A+ with no lag noticeable. A problem that was more than annoying was the A.I. not just frustrating, just pure stupid. When walking down a narrow hall or trying to go through a door way they just stand in your way and in GOW3 you can’t just push them out of the way, you need to walk away and hope they move. Then the A.I., at times will come to help you, but most of the time the A.I. just stands 10 feet away and lets you bleed out and start over. Thankfully each time this happened it was at a check point so there wasn’t much time lost. It did however seem that the Locust had smarter A.I. on their team than ours. THAT was the only annoying, frustrating issue we dealt with on our end.

The campaign, story mode seemed as it was longer and added more to it then Gears 2, it felt they went back to part 1 and made it more lengthy then Gears 2. And not taking away from the multiplayer aspect of the game, but in fact adding to it with new modes and new features that are sure to be a hit! With the all new Beast mode you get to control the Locust and take out the humans in 12 waves of mayhem, the only problem with this is you have a time limit to it. Kill 5 or more humans in under a minute is pretty hard, but the humans also have spikes that slow you down, to get through these spikes takes around 7-9 seconds. You can get extra time by destroying turrets and such, but this is still not a whole lot of time added. Beast mode is fun, but we feel this is better done with another team member to help you get through the waves. Horde mode is back and redefined amazingly. With the new features like making a base, adding turrets and defensive wires or spikes it adds a whole new level of game play to horde mode. And don’t forget the good old death matches and just start a kill streak. Also king of the hill is back and better than ever.

The story offers tons of new characters to the mix and brings back old favorites. You learn more about past lives of Marcus and Cole before the war and start to see what they lost and gave up. And finally, [SPOLIER] : Clayton Carmine is introduced and is a big guy. The fans have spoken and with the T-shirt sales CARMINE LIVES! This has to be one of the best twists to the story, but also Dom doesn’t make it and that was a sad shocker, but we figured it was bound to happen sooner or later because of the wife and kids issue. Just sad to have Marcus loses and wins at the same time. [END SPOLIER] You can unlock most of the campaign characters for multiplayer modes and such by completing certain tasks or by reaching levels to unlock them along with different weapon skins and executions as well, and don’t forget the unlocks that were also in the beta!

The game is well rounded and Epic did an amazing job. We just fear that Epic painted themselves into a corner if they ever want to revisit the series because there is no one left to fight and just about everything is answered. We like that Epic isn’t just releases a Gears game ever year or so, but the game has a big following and support it with a big online community and online play. We can’t wait to see what Cliffy B does next without Gears Of War!

I at least would have given the frustration level a 3 if you are playing solo. I kept dying lulz. Great review, love this game! Bummed that it will only be a Trilogy though, I have them all and the whole story is just plain ‘EPIC’

  2. I finished the SP on Hardcore by myself on the weekend and spent a good chunk of the week prior doing it too.

Definitely one of the best SP story plots I’ve ever played through and I feel the trilogy has got a good rest. The game is the finest title by Epic and I’ll be enjoying it for years to come.

    All in all, a beautiful game…. 😀
